Chapter Six

He took her to The Morning Glory Café, a popular diner famous for its all-day breakfast menu.

“How did you know about this place?” Amy asked.

“Warren recommended it for the steak and eggs platter,” he told her. “Have you been here before?”

“At least once a week,” she admitted. “I work at the Wellbrook Medical Clinic across the street.”

“I thought you worked at the hospital ER.”

“There, too.”

The waitress came over with a coffeepot in hand and filled both of their mugs. “Good morning, Dr. Jensen.”

Amy smiled. “Hi, Lori. How are you doing?”

“Counting the days.”

Ben guessed that her hugely rounded belly was the reason for the waitress’s unusual response.

“It won’t be too much longer,” Amy assured her.

“From your lips,” the pregnant woman said. Then her gaze shifted to Ben, and her brows rose. “New recruit?”

Amy shook her head. “This is Ben. He’s…a friend.”

“Boyfriend?” Lori teased.

“No,” she said quickly. “Just an old friend.”

“Hey,” he interjected. “Thirty isn’t so old.”

Lori grinned. “What can I get for you today?”

Ben nodded for Amy to give her order.

“I’ll have the spinach-and-feta egg-white omelet with whole wheat toast,” she decided.

“Steak—medium, and eggs—over easy,” Ben said. “With a side of bacon and hash browns. No toast.”

“Got it,” Lori said, and went to place the order.

Amy looked at Ben. “Steak and bacon? Do you want to have a heart attack?”

“If I did, would you tear my shirt open and put your hands on me?”

“You must have been in the jungle longer than I realized if you’re that desperate for a woman’s touch.”

“Just yours,” he replied.

She lifted her cup to her lips and sipped her coffee.

“You don’t believe that I could still have feelings for you after twelve years?” he guessed. “Truthfully, I didn’t believe it, either. Until I saw you get out of your car at the church yesterday.”

“In my scrubs?” Her voice was filled with skepticism.

“It wasn’t what you were wearing—although that dress last night was pretty spectacular,” he admitted. “It was just you. It was always you.”

“I think the scent of all those flowers in the ballroom went to your head.”

Ben sat back. It was obvious she wasn’t ready to have this conversation, and he was confident there would be time enough later to say everything he needed to say, so he changed the topic.

“Tell me about the clinic across the street,” Ben suggested.

“It’s a privately-funded facility that provides health care for unwed mothers and their children.”

“That must be quite a change from your usual routine in the ER.”

“There is no routine in the ER,” she said. “Every day is different.”

“But you love it.”

She nodded. “I do. And I love working at the clinic because I’m able to get to know my patients, follow their prenatal care, deliver their babies and watch those babies grow. But…”

“But,” he prompted.

She smiled her thanks to Lori when the waitress set their plates on the table. “But lately I’ve been thinking that I want to do something more—be part of something bigger.”

“More than what?” he wondered, genuinely baffled by her statement. “You
